The Rigid Arrangement
macOS offers several ways to view and organize files on the desktop. While many users appreciate the neatness of the “Stacks” feature, there is a secondary sorting mechanism that is often accidentally activated: Group by Kind. When this is turned on, macOS automatically sorts every icon on your desktop into rigid, invisible rows or columns based on file type (e.g., all folders at the top right, followed by all PDFs, followed by all images). Unlike Stacks, they aren’t collapsed into piles, but they are locked into this specific order. If you try to drag a folder to a custom spot on the left side of your screen, it will instantly snap back to the “Folders” group on the right, completely preventing custom arrangements.
Unlocking Icon Placement
To regain the ability to freely drag and drop your files anywhere on the screen and stop macOS from automatically grouping desktop items by kind, you must change the underlying view options for the desktop.
Ensure you are on your main desktop (close or minimize any open windows so you can see your wallpaper). Right-click (or Control-click) on any completely empty, blank space on the desktop background. A context menu will appear. Hover your mouse over the option labelled Sort By. (In some older macOS versions, this might say “Clean Up By” or “Arrange By”). A secondary flyout menu will appear showing options like Name, Kind, Date Modified, etc. To completely disable this rigid sorting and unlock your icons, you must click on the option at the very top of that list: None. Once “None” is selected, the invisible grid is lifted, and you can freely place any icon anywhere on your screen.
