How to Instantly Define Words Using the Mac Force Touch Trackpad

If you are reading a dense article or a technical PDF on your Mac and encounter a word you do not recognize, you do not need to open a new tab and search Google for the definition. If your MacBook or Magic Trackpad supports “Force Touch” (a feature standard on all Macs released since 2015), you can instantly pull up the built-in macOS Dictionary overlay with a single, physical press.

How to Use the Force Touch Dictionary

The Force Touch trackpad does not use a traditional mechanical hinge; it uses haptic feedback to simulate a click. If you press down harder after the initial “click,” the trackpad registers a secondary, deeper press known as a “Force Click.”

  1. Open a document, a webpage in Safari, or an email containing a word you want to define.
  2. Move your mouse cursor directly over the word. You do not need to highlight it; simply hover the arrow over any part of the word.
  3. Press down firmly on your trackpad. You will feel the standard click, followed by a second, deeper haptic “thud.”
  4. The moment you feel the second click, release the pressure.

A small, semi-transparent bubble will instantly pop up directly over the text. This bubble contains the full definition of the word pulled directly from the macOS Dictionary app, complete with pronunciation guides, synonyms, and parts of speech.

Troubleshooting: Why Isn’t It Working?

If you press firmly on the trackpad and nothing happens, the feature may be disabled in your System Settings, or it may be mapped to a different gesture.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
  2. Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Trackpad.
  3. Under the “Point & Click” tab, look for the setting labeled Look up & data detectors.
  4. Ensure the dropdown menu next to it is set to Force Click with one finger.
  5. (Optional) If you do not like the physical sensation of the Force Click, you can change this setting to Tap with three fingers instead.

Once enabled, this gesture works universally across almost every native macOS application, allowing you to instantly define words, preview web links, or look up tracking numbers without ever leaving your current window.
