If you watch a power user navigate macOS, it looks like magic. Windows fly away to reveal the desktop, the screen instantly locks when they step away, and the Launchpad appears out of nowhere, all without them ever touching the keyboard. They are not casting spells; they are using one of Apple’s most underutilized productivity features: macOS Hot Corners.
Hot Corners turn the four extreme corners of your Mac’s screen into invisible, programmable buttons. When you flick your mouse pointer into one of these corners, it instantly triggers a specific system action. In this guide, you will learn how to configure these corners to dramatically speed up your daily workflow.
Step 1: Where to Find the Settings
Apple has moved the location of this setting in recent versions of macOS, so you might not stumble upon it accidentally.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older Macs).
- Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll all the way to the very bottom of the right-hand panel and click the Hot Corners… button.
A small window will appear showing a miniature preview of your screen with four dropdown menus, one in each corner.
Step 2: Choosing Your Actions
Clicking any of the four dropdown menus reveals a list of actions you can assign to that specific corner. Here is a highly recommended setup used by many productivity experts:
- Top-Left Corner -> Lock Screen: If you work in an office or a coffee shop, security is vital. By assigning this corner to “Lock Screen,” you can simply flick your mouse to the top left as you stand up, instantly securing your Mac without needing to remember a keyboard shortcut.
- Bottom-Right Corner -> Desktop: When you need to grab a file saved on your desktop, but you have six apps open, flicking your mouse to the bottom right will instantly push all open windows off the screen, revealing your pristine desktop. Flick it again, and the windows snap back into place.
- Bottom-Left Corner -> Mission Control: Mission Control shows you a bird’s-eye view of every single window you currently have open. Assigning this to a corner allows you to instantly locate a lost app.
- Top-Right Corner -> Quick Note: When you are on a phone call and need to jot down a number instantly, flicking to the top right will slide a brand new Apple Note onto the screen, ready for typing.
Step 3: Preventing Accidental Triggers
The main reason people disable Hot Corners is that they accidentally trigger them when reaching for the Apple Logo or the Wi-Fi icon. Apple provides a brilliant, hidden solution to this problem: Modifier Keys.
While assigning an action in the Hot Corners menu, hold down the Command (⌘), Option (⌥), or Shift (⇧) key on your keyboard. You will see the icon for that key appear next to the action in the dropdown list.
Now, flicking your mouse into the corner will do absolutely nothing. The action will only trigger if you throw the mouse into the corner while simultaneously holding down the chosen key. This completely eliminates accidental triggers while preserving the speed of the feature.
