If you have used your iPhone for several years, syncing it with different email accounts, iCloud, and social media apps, your address book is likely full of duplicate entries. Scrolling past three different listings for the same person is frustrating and clutters your phone. Fortunately, Apple recently introduced a built-in tool that automatically finds and merges duplicate contacts with a single tap.
How to Automatically Merge Contacts
Starting with iOS 16, your iPhone actively scans your Contacts app in the background to look for matching names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
- Open the Phone app on your iPhone and tap the Contacts tab at the bottom, or simply open the dedicated Contacts app.
- Scroll to the very top of your contacts list (above the letter A).
- If your iPhone has detected duplicates, you will see a prominent message at the very top of the screen saying “Duplicates Found.” Tap on View Duplicates.
- You will be presented with a list of all the duplicate entries. You can tap on individual names to review exactly which details are being combined to ensure no data is lost.
- If you are happy to merge them all at once, simply tap the Merge All button at the bottom of the screen.
- Confirm your choice by tapping Merge Duplicates.
Your iPhone will instantly combine the entries, merging the disparate phone numbers, emails, and physical addresses into a single, clean contact card.
How to Manually Merge Contacts
If your iPhone’s automatic system missed a duplicate (for example, if one entry is “John Smith” and the other is just “John from Work”), you can merge them manually.
- Open the first contact card (e.g., “John Smith”).
- Tap Edit in the top right corner.
- Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and tap link contacts….
- Your address book will open. Find and tap the second contact (“John from Work”).
- Tap Link in the top right corner, then tap Done.
Both entries are now permanently merged into one unified contact.
