How to Find Out Which Apps are Draining Your Mac’s Battery

If your MacBook’s battery life suddenly drops from a reliable 10 hours down to just 3 hours, a rogue application is likely consuming a massive amount of background processing power. Instead of guessing which app is responsible, macOS provides a built-in diagnostic tool that precisely tracks the energy consumption of every single piece of software on your computer.

Using the Activity Monitor

The Activity Monitor is the Mac equivalent of the Windows Task Manager, and it includes a dedicated tab just for power consumption.

  1. Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search.
  2. Type Activity Monitor and press Enter to launch the app.
  3. Look at the top of the Activity Monitor window and click on the Energy tab.
  4. Click the column header titled 12 hr Power to sort the list from highest to lowest.

Understanding the Data

The “12 hr Power” column represents the average energy impact of the app over the last 12 hours, making it the most reliable indicator of a long-term battery drain. A secondary column, “Energy Impact,” shows the app’s real-time power draw right in this exact second.

If you see a specific app (for example, Google Chrome or an aggressive background syncing tool) sitting at the very top of the list with a massive number compared to everything else, it is the culprit. To stop the drain immediately, select the rogue app from the list and click the ‘X’ button in the top toolbar of the Activity Monitor to forcefully quit it.
