How to Fix a Mac That Will Not Connect to Wi-Fi

MacBooks are generally known for their “it just works” reliability, which makes it particularly frustrating when your Mac suddenly refuses to connect to your Wi-Fi network. Whether your Wi-Fi icon has an exclamation mark over it, your Mac repeatedly asks for a password you know is correct, or the network simply refuses to assign an IP address, the underlying issue is usually software-related.

If your router is working fine for all your other devices but your Mac is stranded offline, here is an advanced troubleshooting guide to force macOS to reconnect to your network.

1. The “Quick Fix”: Forget and Rejoin the Network

When macOS updates or your router firmware changes, the stored security certificate for your Wi-Fi network can become mismatched. Forgetting the network forces your Mac to request a fresh authentication token.

  1. Open the Apple Menu () and select System Settings (or System Preferences).
  2. Click on Wi-Fi in the sidebar.
  3. Find your network in the Known Networks list.
  4. Click the three dots next to it (or the Advanced button on older macOS versions) and select Forget This Network.
  5. Turn your Wi-Fi off and back on again, then select your network and re-enter the password.

2. Renew the DHCP Lease

If your Mac says it is connected to Wi-Fi but you cannot load any webpages, it likely failed to receive a valid IP address from your router. You can force the router to assign a new one manually.

  1. Go to System Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Click the Details… button next to your connected network.
  3. Select TCP/IP from the left sidebar.
  4. Click the Renew DHCP Lease button.
  5. Click OK. Wait a few seconds and see if your internet connection is restored.

3. Create a New Network Location

macOS groups your network settings into “Locations”. Over time, the default “Automatic” location can become bloated with conflicting DNS or proxy settings from old networks or VPNs. Creating a fresh location often instantly resolves connectivity bugs.

  1. Go to System Settings > Network.
  2. Click the Locations dropdown menu. (On macOS Ventura and Sonoma, you may need to click the downward arrow or “More” button at the bottom of the Network screen).
  3. Select Edit Locations.
  4. Click the plus (+) button, name the new location “Home” or “Test”, and click Done.
  5. Ensure this new location is selected, then try to connect to your Wi-Fi again.

4. The Advanced Fix: Delete Corrupted SystemConfiguration Files

If your Mac refuses to turn on Wi-Fi at all, or if it instantly disconnects the moment it joins a network, the core configuration files that manage your networking hardware are likely corrupted. You can safely delete them; macOS will automatically regenerate clean versions when you restart.

Note: This will erase all your saved Wi-Fi networks, so you will need to re-enter your passwords.

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in your menu bar and turn Wi-Fi Off.
  2. Open a Finder window.
  3. In the top Apple menu bar, click Go > Go to Folder… (or press Shift + Command + G).
  4. Copy and paste this exact path and press Enter: /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
  5. In this folder, locate the following files (you may not have all of them, which is fine):
    • com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    • com.apple.network.identification.plist
    • com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist
    • NetworkInterfaces.plist
    • preferences.plist
  6. Drag these files to the Trash. You will be prompted to enter your Mac’s administrator password.
  7. Restart your Mac immediately.
  8. Once booted, turn Wi-Fi back on and connect to your network.

5. Run Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics Tool

If you have followed all these steps and the connection is still failing, macOS has a hidden diagnostic tool that can identify physical hardware issues.

  1. Hold down the Option (⌥) key on your keyboard.
  2. While holding the key, click the Wi-Fi icon in the top menu bar.
  3. Select Open Wireless Diagnostics… from the expanded menu.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts. The tool will analyze your environment and generate a report telling you if the issue is a failing Wi-Fi antenna, severe wireless interference, or a router conflict.
