How to Enable and Configure macOS Content Caching to Save Bandwidth

Introduction

If you manage multiple Apple devices (Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs) on a single network, software updates and iCloud syncing can quickly overwhelm your internet bandwidth. macOS includes a built-in feature called Content Caching. When enabled, one Mac downloads updates, apps, and iCloud data, and securely shares them with other Apple devices on the local network. This guide details how to configure Content Caching for maximum efficiency.

Prerequisites

You need a Mac running a modern version of macOS (macOS High Sierra or later). This Mac should ideally be connected via Ethernet (not Wi-Fi) and remain powered on and awake. It must also have sufficient free disk space to store the cached data.

Step 1: Enable Content Caching

To turn on the feature:

  1. Click the Apple menu and select System Settings (or System Preferences).
  2. Navigate to General > Sharing.
  3. Scroll down and toggle the switch for Content Caching to the ON position.
  4. Click the Info (i) button next to the toggle to access advanced configurations.

Step 2: Choose What to Cache

In the Content Caching options pane, you can specify exactly what type of data the Mac should store. The Cache drop-down menu offers three options:

  • All Content: Caches both software updates (macOS, iOS, apps) and user iCloud data (photos, documents). This provides the maximum bandwidth savings but requires the most disk space.
  • Shared Content Only: Caches only software updates and app downloads. This is recommended for enterprise environments where user privacy or storage limits are a concern.
  • iCloud Content Only: Caches only user iCloud data.

Step 3: Allocate Storage Space

By default, macOS dynamically manages the cache size, but you can set a hard limit to prevent it from filling your entire drive.

  1. In the Content Caching options window, click the Options… button.
  2. Use the slider to set the maximum cache size. A minimum of 50GB is recommended for effective caching, though 100GB to 200GB is ideal for environments with numerous iOS devices.
  3. Click OK to save the allocation.

Step 4: Advanced Client Configuration (Optional)

By default, Content Caching provides data to devices on the exact same public IP address. If your network uses multiple subnets, you must configure advanced routing.

  1. Hold down the Option key while in the Content Caching preference pane.
  2. Click the Advanced Options… button that appears.
  3. Under the Clients tab, you can specify exactly which local IP address ranges the caching server should serve. This ensures iPads on a separate Wi-Fi VLAN can access the wired Mac’s cache.

Once enabled, the Mac will silently intercept requests to Apple’s servers from local devices and serve the content directly at Gigabit speeds, drastically reducing external bandwidth usage.
