How to Disable the macOS ‘Smart Zoom’ (Double-Tap with Two Fingers)

The Accidental Zoom

Apple’s Magic Trackpad (and the built-in trackpads on MacBooks) supports a variety of multi-touch gestures. One of these is “Smart Zoom.” If you double-tap (not press, just lightly tap) on the trackpad with two fingers simultaneously, macOS will attempt to intelligently zoom in on the web page, PDF, or image you are currently viewing, centering the content on the screen.

While useful for reading small text, this gesture is very easy to trigger accidentally. If you are resting your fingers on the trackpad while reading, or if you attempt to right-click (which is often configured as a two-finger click) but don’t press down hard enough, the screen will suddenly zoom in, disorienting you and interrupting your workflow. If you prefer to zoom manually using keyboard shortcuts or the pinch gesture, you can disable Smart Zoom entirely.

How to Disable Smart Zoom

You can turn off this specific gesture in the Trackpad settings.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings… (or System Preferences).
  2. Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Trackpad.
  3. At the top of the main Trackpad window, click on the Scroll & Zoom tab.
  4. Look down the list of options for Smart zoom.
  5. Toggle the switch to the Off position (or uncheck the box on older versions of macOS).

The double-tap gesture is now disabled. You can still zoom in on content using the standard “pinch to zoom” gesture (if enabled), or by pressing Command + on your keyboard, but accidental taps will no longer cause your screen to jump.
