How to Customise the Mac Dock Position, Magnification, and Hiding Behaviour

The Dock is the central launcher and multitasking bar in macOS, holding your essential applications, active software, recent documents, and the Trash. While Apple places the Dock along the bottom of the screen by default, wide-aspect modern displays often benefit from alternative placements and custom visual behaviours. Tailoring the Dock’s size, position, and automatic hiding allows you to maximise your available screen workspace and streamline daily navigation.

Changing the Dock’s Screen Edge Position

Modern widescreen monitors offer significantly more horizontal space than vertical height. Moving the Dock to the left or right screen edge preserves precious vertical space for reading long articles, writing documents, and browsing web pages:

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your menu bar and select System Settings… (or System Preferences…).
  2. In the left sidebar, click Desktop & Dock.
  3. Locate the Position on screen dropdown menu.
  4. Select Left, Bottom, or Right.
  5. The Dock immediately repositions to your selected display boundary.

Enabling Icon Magnification on Hover

If you prefer keeping your Dock icons small to preserve screen space but find it difficult to discern subtle app symbols, you can enable interactive magnification:

  1. Under Settings > Desktop & Dock, locate the Magnification slider.
  2. Toggle the checkbox or drag the slider from Off toward Max.
  3. Now, when you move your cursor across the Dock, icons smoothly expand beneath your mouse pointer like a fluid wave, making it easy to identify apps while maintaining a compact overall bar.

Automatically Hiding and Showing the Dock

To claim 100% of your screen estate for open application windows without the Dock permanently occupying the margin:

  1. In Desktop & Dock settings, toggle on Automatically hide and show the Dock.
  2. Alternatively, press the global macOS keyboard shortcut Cmd + Option + D at any time to toggle auto-hide on or off instantly.
  3. When enabled, the Dock slides off-screen into hiding. Move your mouse cursor against the display edge where the Dock resides to summon it instantly.

Customising Minimise Animations and Recent Apps

Further refine your Dock workflow with these practical toggles:

  • Minimise windows using: Switch between the classic curved Genie effect and the faster, flatter Scale effect to speed up window minimisation.
  • Show recent applications in Dock: By default, macOS reserves the right side of the Dock for recently used apps. If you prefer a clean bar showing strictly pinned favourites, toggle this option off.
  • Double-click a window’s title bar to: Set this to Zoom (expand to fill screen) or Minimise for fast window control.
