How to Create a New Folder on a Mac Desktop

If you are transitioning from a Windows PC or an iPad to a Mac computer for the very first time, the desktop environment can feel a bit unfamiliar.

If your desktop is currently cluttered with dozens of loose screenshots, downloaded PDFs, and stray text documents, the easiest way to organize the chaos is by creating a folder.

Method 1: The Right-Click Menu

This is the most common and intuitive way to create a folder.

  1. Close or minimize any open windows so you are looking at the blank Mac Desktop.
  2. Right-click anywhere on the empty desktop background.
    • Note: If you are using a MacBook trackpad and right-click doesn’t work, tap the trackpad with two fingers simultaneously.
  3. A small menu will pop up. Click on New Folder.
  4. A blue folder icon will appear on your desktop with the name “untitled folder” highlighted in blue.
  5. While the text is highlighted, immediately type the name you want for the folder (e.g., “Tax Documents” or “Family Photos”).
  6. Press the Return (Enter) key on your keyboard to save the name.

Method 2: The Keyboard Shortcut

If you want to speed up your workflow and avoid clicking through menus, macOS has a built-in keyboard shortcut to instantly spawn a new folder wherever you are.

  1. Ensure you are clicked on the Desktop (so the menu bar at the very top left of your screen says “Finder” next to the Apple logo).
  2. Hold down the Command (⌘) key and the Shift key simultaneously.
  3. While holding both, press the N key.

The “untitled folder” will instantly appear, ready for you to type a name. This shortcut works not only on the Desktop, but inside any Finder window (like your Documents or Downloads folders) as well.

Method 3: Creating a Folder from Selected Items

macOS has a brilliant, slightly hidden feature that Windows lacks. If you have ten loose photographs scattered across your desktop, you don’t have to create an empty folder and manually drag them all inside. You can command the Mac to automatically bundle them into a folder for you.

  1. Use your mouse to click and drag a box over all the loose files you want to organize, highlighting them all.
  2. Right-click on any one of the highlighted files.
  3. The very first option at the top of the pop-up menu will say New Folder with Selection (X Items). Click it.

The Mac will instantly sweep all the files off the desktop, stuff them inside a brand new folder, and prompt you to name it. It is the fastest way to clean up a messy workspace.
