Spotlight Search is macOS’s highly efficient, system-wide search engine, capable of instantly locating files, launching applications, performing mathematical calculations, and querying the web. By default, it is summoned using the keyboard shortcut Command (⌘) + Spacebar. While this is arguably one of the most useful features on a Mac, the default keyboard shortcut is highly problematic for power users, programmers, or bilingual individuals who rely on that exact same key combination to trigger other essential functions (such as switching input languages, triggering macros in a specific IDE, or activating third-party productivity launchers like Alfred or Raycast).
This guide explains how to completely disable the Spotlight Search keyboard shortcut, freeing up the Command + Spacebar combination for your own custom workflows.
Disable the Shortcut via Keyboard Settings
You cannot uninstall Spotlight, but you can easily unbind its activation triggers via the System Settings menu.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on macOS Monterey and older) from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Keyboard.
- On the right side of the window, locate and click the button labelled Keyboard Shortcuts….
- A new dialogue box will appear overlaying your settings. In the left-hand pane of this box, select Spotlight.
- On the right side, you will see two default shortcuts:
- Show Spotlight search (⌘ Space)
- Show Finder search window (⌥ ⌘ Space)
- Uncheck the box next to Show Spotlight search. (You may also choose to uncheck the Finder search shortcut if desired).
- Click Done in the bottom-right corner to save your changes.
Alternative Ways to Access Spotlight
Even though you have disabled the primary keyboard trigger, the Spotlight engine itself remains fully functional.
If you occasionally need to use Apple’s built-in search, you can still summon it by simply clicking the small Magnifying Glass icon located in the top-right corner of your macOS menu bar. Meanwhile, you are now entirely free to map Command + Spacebar to Alfred, Raycast, or your preferred language input toggle without the macOS Spotlight bar aggressively overriding your command.
