The Link Routing Vector
Apple heavily integrates its native Safari browser into the core of macOS. By default, any web link you click within an email, a PDF document, or a third-party messaging application will automatically launch Safari to render the page. If your professional workflow demands the developer tools built into Google Chrome, or the strict privacy protections of Mozilla Firefox, having Safari constantly interject itself every time you click a hyperlink is highly disruptive.
How to Change the Default Browser
You can instruct the macOS operating system to permanently intercept all web requests and route them directly to your preferred third-party application.
1. First, ensure your preferred browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, or Brave) is actually installed in your Mac’s Applications folder.
2. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen.
3. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
4. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Desktop & Dock.
5. Scroll down the main pane until you locate the section labelled Default web browser.
6. Click the dropdown menu next to this setting.
7. The list will display every compatible browser currently installed on your computer. Select your desired application (e.g., Google Chrome).
The operating system immediately registers the change. The next time you click a hyperlink in your email client, macOS will bypass Safari entirely and launch your newly designated primary browser.
