The Identity Personalization Vector
When you boot up your Mac, the primary Login Screen serves as a strict security checkpoint. By default, macOS represents your encrypted User Profile with a generic, mathematically generated graphic (like a flower or an abstract shape). If you operate a machine with multiple active users, this lack of visual differentiation causes authentication delays. You must instruct the system architecture to replace the generic graphical asset with a customized, high-resolution `.jpeg` or a personalized Memoji avatar.
How to Change the Mac Login Screen Picture
Apple secures this profile asset deep within the Users & Groups matrix, requiring administrator privileges to rewrite the image file bound to the encrypted user account.
1. Access the System Architecture:
* Click the Apple Logo in the absolute top-left corner of your screen.
* Select System Settings from the dropdown menu (or System Preferences on older OS versions).
2. Navigate the Matrix:
* In the left-hand navigation sidebar, scroll down and click on Users & Groups.
3. The Target Acquisition:
* In the main pane, you will see a list of all active user accounts on the machine.
* Locate your specific profile at the top of the list (it will be labelled “Current User”).
* Hover your cursor directly over the circular profile picture itself. A small “edit” text overlay will materialize over the image.
* Click the picture.
4. The Asset Selection Phase:
* A new graphical interface will slide up, presenting multiple ingestion vectors.
* Memoji: Click this to construct a 3D avatar that will actually animate and react on the login screen.
* Photos: Click this to access your iCloud Photo Library and select a standard `.jpeg` photograph.
* Camera: Click this to instantly trigger the Mac’s physical webcam and capture a live image of yourself.
* Suggestions: Select from Apple’s pre-rendered high-quality stock graphics.
5. The Cropping and Finalization:
* Once you select an image, a circular cropping tool will appear. Click and drag the image to center your face within the circle.
* Use the slider at the bottom to zoom in or out.
* Click Save. The macOS kernel instantly overwrites the old asset. The next time you lock your screen or reboot, the new identity graphic will be permanently displayed.
