When a friend or family member visits your home, the first thing they usually ask for is the Wi-Fi password. If you have a complex password (as you should for security), digging out the router, reading the tiny print, or typing in a long string of random characters is tedious. If you and your guest both use Apple devices, iOS has a built-in feature that allows you to instantly share your Wi-Fi password over the air with a single tap, securely and without ever revealing the actual text of the password.
Prerequisites for Wi-Fi Sharing
Before this feature will work, both your iPhone and the device you are sharing with must meet a few specific conditions:
- Apple Devices Only: This feature only works between Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, or Mac). You cannot use this method to share a password with an Android or Windows device.
- Contacts: You must have the other person’s Apple ID email address saved in your Contacts app, and they must have your Apple ID email address saved in theirs.
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi: Both devices must have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.
- Proximity: Both devices must be physically close to each other (within normal Bluetooth range).
- Unlocked: Both devices must be awake and unlocked.
How to Share the Password
Once you have ensured the prerequisites are met, the actual sharing process is incredibly simple.
- Make sure your iPhone is currently connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to share.
- Ask your guest to open the Settings app on their device and tap on Wi-Fi.
- Ask them to tap on the name of your Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks.
- Keep your iPhone unlocked and close to their device.
- Within a few seconds, a pop-up card will automatically appear on your iPhone screen that says “Wi-Fi Password” along with the message “Do you want to share the Wi-Fi password for [Network Name] with [Guest’s Name]?”
- Tap the blue Share Password button.
- Your iPhone will wirelessly transmit the encrypted password to their device. Their device will automatically connect to the network.
- Tap Done on your iPhone to dismiss the pop-up.
What if the Pop-up Doesn’t Appear?
If you don’t see the sharing prompt on your iPhone, try these troubleshooting steps:
- Restart both devices.
- Verify that you both have each other’s Apple ID email addresses saved correctly in your Contacts.
- Ensure you are close enough (try holding the devices right next to each other).
- Make sure neither device has Personal Hotspot turned on.
- Forget the network on the guest’s device and try tapping it again.
