How to Use NameDrop on iPhone to Share Contact Details Instantly

Exchanging contact details with someone new usually involves an awkward ritual. You hand over your phone for them to type their number, they misspell your name, the email address gets a typo, and both of you end up with incomplete or incorrect information. Some people text their details, others take photos of business cards, and a surprising number still write phone numbers on napkins.

Apple introduced NameDrop in iOS 17 to solve this problem. NameDrop lets you share your contact information with another iPhone user simply by holding the two phones close together. No typing, no dictation, no QR codes — just bring the phones near each other, confirm what you want to share, and the exchange happens instantly.

How NameDrop Works

NameDrop uses a combination of NFC (Near Field Communication) and AirDrop to transfer contact details between two iPhones. When you hold the top edges of two iPhones close together (within a few centimetres), both phones detect each other and display a contact sharing interface on screen.

Each person sees a preview of the contact card that will be shared. You can choose to share your full contact card, or select specific details to share (for example, just your phone number and email, but not your home address). Both parties must confirm the exchange before any information is transferred.

How to Use NameDrop

1. Make sure both iPhones are running iOS 17 or later and both have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
2. Unlock both phones.
3. Hold the top edge of your iPhone near the top edge of the other person’s iPhone. The phones should be very close together — almost touching.
4. Both phones will display a glowing animation and show a contact sharing screen.
5. Choose whether to Share your contact details or Receive Only (take their details without sharing yours).
6. Tap Share to confirm.

The transfer happens in a couple of seconds. The shared contact information appears in the Contacts app on both phones.

Setting Up Your Contact Card for NameDrop

Before using NameDrop, make sure your My Card (your personal contact card) is up to date:

1. Open the Contacts app.
2. Tap My Card at the top of the contacts list.
3. Tap Edit and update your name, phone number, email address, and any other details you want to share.
4. You can also add a Contact Photo or Contact Poster — a large, customised image that appears on the other person’s screen during NameDrop. To set this up, go to Contacts > My Card > Contact Photo & Poster.

Choosing What Information to Share

NameDrop does not automatically share everything on your contact card. When the sharing screen appears, you can tap on the fields to customise exactly what is shared:

• Phone number — Choose which phone number to share if you have multiple (personal, work).
• Email address — Select a specific email address.
• Other fields — You can include or exclude your home address, company name, job title, and other contact card fields.

This is an important privacy feature. You might want to share only your work email with a professional contact, or only your personal phone number with a friend.

NameDrop with Apple Watch

NameDrop also works between an Apple Watch (running watchOS 10.1 or later) and an iPhone, or between two Apple Watches. This is particularly convenient when your phone is in your bag or pocket.

To use NameDrop on Apple Watch:

1. Open the Contacts app on your Apple Watch.
2. Tap My Card at the top.
3. Tap Share.
4. Hold the Apple Watch display near the other person’s iPhone or Apple Watch.

How to Disable NameDrop

If you are concerned about accidentally triggering NameDrop when your phone is near someone else’s, or if you simply do not want to use the feature, you can turn it off:

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap General.
3. Tap AirDrop.
4. Toggle off Bringing Devices Together.

This disables the proximity-based NameDrop trigger while leaving AirDrop itself functional for file sharing.

Privacy and Security Considerations

• Both parties must confirm: NameDrop never shares information without your explicit approval. Simply holding phones near each other triggers the preview screen, but no data is transferred until you tap Share.
• You control what is shared: You can review and customise which fields are included before every share.
• Receive Only option: You can choose to receive the other person’s contact details without sharing your own.
• Encrypted transfer: NameDrop uses the same encrypted transport as AirDrop, meaning the data is protected during transmission.
• No accidental shares: Both phones must be unlocked and held very close together for NameDrop to activate. It will not trigger through a table, inside a bag, or from across a room.

Troubleshooting NameDrop

If NameDrop is not working, check the following:

• Both phones must be running iOS 17 or later. NameDrop is not available on older iOS versions.
• Both phones must be unlocked. NameDrop does not activate when a phone is locked.
• Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices (they do not need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network, but the radios must be on).
• AirDrop must not be set to “Receiving Off”. Go to Settings > General > AirDrop and ensure it is set to “Contacts Only” or “Everyone for 10 Minutes”.
• “Bringing Devices Together” must be enabled. Check Settings > General > AirDrop.
• Hold the top edges close together. The NFC antenna is located at the top of the iPhone. Holding the phones bottom-to-bottom or side-by-side will not trigger NameDrop.

NameDrop eliminates the awkwardness of exchanging contact details. Once you use it a few times, manually typing phone numbers feels unnecessarily slow and error-prone.
