How to Manually Add a Custom Font to Your iPhone Using a Configuration Profile

While the iPhone includes an excellent selection of default fonts, designers, developers, and creative users often need to view documents, presentations, or websites using specific custom typography. Unlike a Mac or a Windows PC where you can simply drag a .ttf file into a system folder, iOS is a highly locked-down operating system. You cannot install system-wide fonts natively through the Settings app without specialized tools.

To add a custom font to your iPhone so that it is recognized by apps like Pages, Keynote, or third-party design tools, you must install it via a Configuration Profile.

Step 1: Download a Font Installation App

Because Apple requires fonts to be packaged inside a cryptographic mobileconfig profile, the easiest and safest way to generate this profile is by using a trusted third-party app.

1. Open the App Store on your iPhone.
2. Search for a free font management app. We highly recommend using iFont or FontDiner, as they are widely trusted and respect user privacy.
3. Download and install the app to your device.

Step 2: Import the Font File

For this example, we will use the iFont app, as it allows you to install your own custom files.

1. Ensure you have your desired font file (usually ending in .ttf or .otf) saved in the Files app on your iPhone, or in iCloud Drive.
2. Open the iFont app.
3. Tap the Import button at the bottom of the screen.
4. Navigate through the Files browser and select your custom .ttf or .otf file. The font will now appear in the iFont “Imported” list.

Step 3: Generate and Install the Configuration Profile

Now that the app has the font, it will package it into a profile that iOS can understand.

1. In the iFont app, locate your imported font and tap the Install button next to it.
2. The app will generate a configuration profile and prompt you to download it. Tap Allow when the iOS system popup appears asking “This website is trying to download a configuration profile.”
3. Once downloaded, close the iFont app and open the main Settings app on your iPhone.
4. Near the very top of the Settings menu (just beneath your Apple ID name), you will see a new row that says Profile Downloaded. Tap on it.
5. You will see a summary of the profile containing your custom font. Tap Install in the top right corner.
6. Enter your iPhone’s passcode to authorize the installation.
7. You may see a standard warning indicating that the profile is unsigned. Tap Install again, and then tap Install one final time at the bottom of the screen to confirm.
8. Tap Done.

Step 4: Verify the Installation

Your custom font is now installed at the system level!

To verify it is working, you can navigate to Settings > General > Fonts. You should see your newly installed typeface listed there.

You can now open Apple Pages, Keynote, or any compatible third-party text editor, highlight your text, and select your custom font from the standard formatting menus.
