How to Connect a Bluetooth Controller to an iPad

Transforming Your iPad into a Gaming Console

The iPad has evolved from a simple media consumption device into an incredibly powerful computer, featuring the exact same M-series processors found in Apple’s premium MacBooks. With this desktop-class performance, the App Store is now flooded with console-quality games, ranging from Genshin Impact and Minecraft to direct ports of AAA titles like Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding.

While playing casual games using the iPad’s touchscreen is perfectly fine, playing complex, fast-paced action games by tapping on flat glass can be frustrating. Your thumbs block half the screen, and the lack of tactile feedback makes precision movements difficult. To get the most out of your iPad gaming experience, you need a physical controller.

Fortunately, Apple supports standard Bluetooth gaming controllers out of the box. Whether you own an Xbox Wireless Controller, a PlayStation DualSense, or a generic third-party gamepad, you can connect it to your iPad in just a few seconds.

Step 1: Put Your Controller into Pairing Mode

Before your iPad can find the controller, you must force the controller to broadcast its Bluetooth signal. The exact method depends on which controller you are using:

  • Xbox Wireless Controller: Press the large, central Xbox button to turn the controller on. Then, press and hold the small, circular Pairing button located on the top edge (near the charging port) for 3 seconds. The Xbox button will begin flashing rapidly.
  • PlayStation DualSense (PS5) or DualShock 4 (PS4): Ensure the controller is turned off. Press and hold the Create button (the small button to the left of the touchpad) AND the central PlayStation button simultaneously for about 5 seconds. The light bar around the touchpad will begin flashing rapidly in short bursts.
  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller: Press any button to turn it on, then press and hold the small, circular Pairing button located on the top edge (next to the charging port) until the green lights at the bottom start flashing back and forth.

Step 2: Connect the Controller to Your iPad

Once your controller’s lights are flashing, it is in pairing mode and searching for a device.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap on Bluetooth in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Ensure the Bluetooth toggle switch at the top of the screen is turned On (coloured green).
  4. Look under the “Other Devices” section at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Your controller should appear in the list (e.g., “Xbox Wireless Controller” or “DualSense Wireless Controller”).
  6. Tap the name of the controller to initiate the connection.

Within a few seconds, the controller will move up to the “My Devices” section, and its status will change to Connected. The flashing lights on the physical controller will also turn solid, confirming the connection was successful.

Customising Your Controller Settings

Once your controller is connected, iOS unlocks a hidden menu allowing you to customise how it behaves across the entire operating system.

  1. With the controller connected, open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to General > Game Controller.

In this menu, you can remap specific buttons (for example, swapping the A and B buttons to mimic a Nintendo layout), adjust the sensitivity of the thumbsticks, and disable haptic feedback (rumble) to save battery life. You can even set up different controller profiles for different games.

Note: If you finish playing and want to conserve your controller’s battery, simply return to the Bluetooth menu, tap the blue “i” icon next to your controller, and select Disconnect. The next time you turn the controller on, it will automatically reconnect to your iPad.
