Exchanging contact details at professional conferences, networking events, or social gatherings traditionally required dictating phone numbers digit by digit, manually composing text messages, or launching third-party scanning applications. Beginning with iOS 17, Apple integrated NameDrop directly into the AirDrop protocol, transforming physical proximity into a streamlined contact exchange mechanism.
By bringing the top edge of one iPhone close to another, NameDrop establishes an encrypted, peer-to-peer wireless handshake using Near Field Communication (NFC) and Ultra Wideband (UWB) sensors. Users can preview customized Contact Posters, select exactly which phone numbers or email addresses to share, and transmit their profile in seconds without unlocking full address book access.
Verifying Hardware and System Requirements for NameDrop
Before attempting to initiate a NameDrop transfer, verify that both communicating devices meet the necessary hardware and operating system parameters:
- Compatible iPhone Models: NameDrop requires an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or any newer device (including iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 lineups).
- Operating System: Both participating devices must run iOS 17.0 or a later release. (NameDrop can also transmit contacts to an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1 or later).
- Wireless Radios: Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must remain enabled on both devices to negotiate the high-speed transfer payload.
- Personal Hotspot: Personal Hotspot must be toggled off during the exchange, as active tethering locks the Wi-Fi Direct interface.
Configuring NameDrop and Proximity Sharing Settings
NameDrop relies on the “Bringing Devices Together” gesture toggle located within the AirDrop configuration menu:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap General and select AirDrop.
- Under the Start Sharing By section, locate the toggle labelled Bringing Devices Together.
- Ensure this switch is toggled On (green).
Security Note: If you work in dense public spaces or prefer to prevent accidental handshake prompts, you can toggle this setting off at any time. When disabled, standard AirDrop transfers via the Share Sheet remain fully operational.
Initiating a NameDrop Exchange Step-by-Step
To transfer contact information seamlessly between two iPhones:
- Ensure both iPhones are unlocked and held within close physical proximity.
- Align the top edge of your iPhone directly against the top edge of the other person’s iPhone (held within 2 to 3 centimetres).
- Both handsets will emit a subtle haptic vibration, accompanied by an animated glowing visual wave rippling across the upper half of both displays.
- Hold the devices steady for one second until your Contact Card appears on screen.
- Review the transmission options displayed on your device:
- Receive Only: Obtains the other person’s contact card while keeping your personal details private.
- Share: Transmits your selected phone number, email address, and Contact Poster while simultaneously receiving their contact information.
- Tap the small drop-down arrow next to your phone number or email if you wish to deselect private information and share only business details.
- Tap Share to complete the transaction.
Once accepted, the new contact details are saved automatically into the native Contacts and Phone applications, populated with the recipient’s chosen profile photo, Contact Poster, and communications metadata.
