The Payment Authorization Vector
Apple Pay is designed for frictionless transactions, allowing you to authenticate purchases simply by glancing at your iPhone via Face ID. However, this convenience can be a severe liability. If your phone is snatched while unlocked, or if a child grabs your device while a payment prompt is active on the screen, a purchase can be authorized instantly without any deliberate intent. For absolute financial security, you must force the device to require a manual passcode entry for every transaction.
How to Turn Off Face ID for Apple Pay
You can selectively sever the biometric link to your Wallet, ensuring Face ID still unlocks your phone, but cannot authorize the transfer of funds.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode.
3. The operating system will demand your PIN code to access this highly secure area. Enter it.
4. Look at the very top section titled Use Face ID For:.
5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Wallet & Apple Pay.
6. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
The biometric bridge is now severed. The next time you attempt to use Apple Pay at a physical terminal, or purchase an app from the App Store, the phone will completely ignore your face and mandate that you manually type in your numerical passcode to finalize the transaction.
