Sharing your home Wi-Fi password with guests can be a tedious process, especially if you followed security best practices and created a long, complex string of random characters. If your guest also uses an iPhone, Apple makes this incredibly easy with a built-in feature that automatically beams the password across if they are in your contacts. However, if your guest uses an Android device, that seamless Apple ecosystem feature is completely useless.
Unlike modern Android phones, which have a built-in “Share Wi-Fi via QR Code” button directly in the network settings, iOS does not natively generate a scannable QR code for your active network. You cannot simply open your Wi-Fi settings and show your Android friend a screen to scan.
Fortunately, you can easily bridge this gap by using Apple’s Shortcuts app to generate a universal Wi-Fi QR code that any Android device can instantly scan to connect, completely bypassing the need to type the complex password.
How to Create the Wi-Fi QR Code Shortcut
Apple includes a pre-built shortcut designed specifically for this purpose inside the official Shortcuts Gallery. You just need to add it to your device.
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone. (It comes pre-installed on all modern iPhones, but if you deleted it, you can redownload it for free from the App Store).
- At the bottom of the screen, tap the Gallery tab.
- In the search bar at the top, type Share Wi-Fi.
- Look for a shortcut titled “Share Wi-Fi” (it usually has a blue icon with a QR code symbol). Tap on it.
- Tap the blue Add Shortcut button at the bottom of the screen.
How to Generate the QR Code for Android Users
Now that the tool is installed, generating the code takes only a few seconds.
- Ensure your iPhone is currently connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to share.
- Open the Shortcuts app and tap the Shortcuts tab at the bottom left to view your library.
- Tap the newly added Share Wi-Fi shortcut.
- A small popup will appear asking for the password to your current Wi-Fi network. (Note: Your iPhone already knows the password, but the Shortcuts app requires you to manually type it in once for security reasons to prevent malicious apps from stealing it).
- Carefully type your complex Wi-Fi password and tap Done.
The shortcut will instantly generate a large, crisp QR code on your iPhone’s screen. Have your friend open the standard Camera app on their Android device and point it at the QR code. A small yellow pill button will appear on their Android screen that says “Join Network.” When they tap it, they will be instantly connected to your Wi-Fi, without ever seeing or typing the actual password.
A Faster Trick for the Future
To avoid opening the Shortcuts app every time a guest arrives, you can place a widget on your home screen.
- Long-press on any empty space on your iPhone home screen until the apps start jiggling.
- Tap the + (plus) button in the top left corner.
- Search for Shortcuts and select it.
- Swipe to find the small, single-shortcut widget and ensure it is set to “Share Wi-Fi.”
- Tap Add Widget.
Now, whenever an Android user asks for the Wi-Fi password, you just tap that single icon on your home screen, type the password once, and present the QR code. It is the fastest possible way to bridge the gap between the two ecosystems.
