How to Set Up and Run Multiple Timers Simultaneously on iPhone

For years, one of the most persistent limitations of the native iOS Clock app was its strict restriction to a single active countdown timer. Users multitasking in the kitchen, timing multiple workout intervals, or tracking simultaneous productivity sprints were forced to rely on third-party utilities or Apple Watch workarounds. In modern iOS releases (iOS 17, iOS 18, and newer), Apple introduced full support for concurrent multi-timers with custom labels, sound presets, and Live Activities integration on the iPhone.

Creating Multiple Timers in the Clock App

Setting up multiple concurrent timers takes place directly in the native Clock app without requiring any additional configuration.

  1. Open the native Clock app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Timers tab located in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select your desired duration using the hours, minutes, and seconds scroll wheels.
  4. Tap Label and enter a descriptive name for your task (for example, “Oven Roast”, “Laundry”, or “Pomodoro Break”). Naming timers is essential when multiple countdowns run simultaneously so you know exactly which alert has expired.
  5. Tap When Timer Ends to choose a specific ringtone, vibration, or select Stop Playing if using the timer as a media sleep timer.
  6. Tap the green Start button to begin the countdown.
  7. To launch a second timer while the first is running, tap the + (plus) icon in the top-right corner of the Timers screen.
  8. Configure the duration, label, and alert tone for your second timer, then tap Start.

You can repeat this process to run as many simultaneous timers as your workflow requires. Each active timer appears as an individual card in a scrollable list on the Timers tab.

Monitoring Multiple Timers via Live Activities and Dynamic Island

Once multiple timers are active, you do not need to keep the Clock app open to monitor their progress:

  • Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro and Newer / iPhone 15 & 16 All Models): The primary timer occupies the main Dynamic Island bubble, displaying the remaining time and a circular progress ring. When a second timer runs, the Dynamic Island splits into two separate bubbles, allowing you to track both timers at a glance. Long-pressing either bubble expands interactive controls to pause or cancel.
  • Lock Screen Live Activities: On your iPhone Lock Screen and in the Notification Centre, each active countdown displays as an individual Live Activity card showing the timer label, current countdown, and pause/stop buttons.
  • StandBy Mode: If your iPhone is charging horizontally on a MagSafe stand, multiple timers display side by side in full-screen widgets.

Saving and Reusing Timer Presets

The Clock app automatically saves recently created countdowns in a dedicated Recents section directly beneath active timers:

  • To quickly restart a common timer (such as a 4-minute tea timer or a 25-minute study block), scroll down to the Recents section and tap the green Play button on that card.
  • To remove an obsolete preset from your Recents list, swipe left across the card and tap Delete.

Using Siri to Start and Manage Multiple Timers

Hands-free voice commands via Siri are particularly convenient when your hands are busy or messy in the kitchen:

  • “Hey Siri, set a pasta timer for 9 minutes.”
  • “Hey Siri, set a bread timer for 25 minutes.”
  • “Hey Siri, how much time is left on the pasta timer?”
  • “Hey Siri, cancel the bread timer.”

Siri automatically recognizes custom labels, ensuring that cancelling or checking one specific timer never interrupts other running countdowns.
