How to Invert Colours on an iPhone

For users with specific visual impairments, such as macular degeneration or extreme light sensitivity, the bright, high-contrast colours of a modern iPhone screen can be blinding or difficult to read. To combat this, Apple includes a powerful accessibility feature that instantly flips every colour on the screen to its exact opposite on the colour wheel (e.g., white becomes black, and blue becomes orange).

While the standard “Dark Mode” simply changes system menus to grey, inverting the colours applies a radical, high-visibility filter across the entire operating system, including all third-party apps, photographs, and web browsers.

Smart Invert vs. Classic Invert

iOS actually offers two different ways to invert your screen. You must choose the one that best suits your needs.

  • Classic Invert: This is a blunt instrument. It reverses every single pixel on the screen. While great for reading text, it means all photographs and videos will look like spooky film negatives.
  • Smart Invert: This is the recommended modern approach. It reverses the colours of the user interface and text, but it intelligently uses artificial intelligence to recognise photographs, videos, and app icons, leaving them in their original, natural colours.

How to Enable Invert Colours

Both options are located deep within the accessibility settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Vision” section at the top, tap on Display & Text Size.
  4. Scroll down until you find the two toggles: Smart Invert and Classic Invert.
  5. Toggle your preferred option to the ON position.

The screen will instantly transition to the inverted colour palette.

How to Create an Invert Shortcut

If you share an iPad with someone who needs inverted colours, or if you only need the feature when reading in total darkness, navigating through the Settings app every single time is tedious. You can map the feature to a physical hardware button for instant access.

  1. Go back to the main Accessibility menu in Settings.
  2. Scroll all the way down to the very bottom and tap on Accessibility Shortcut.
  3. A list of features will appear. Tap on Smart Invert (or Classic Invert) so a blue checkmark appears next to it.

You have now mapped the feature to a hardware shortcut. To trigger it from anywhere (even the lock screen):

  • On Face ID iPhones (No Home Button): Quickly triple-click the physical Power Button on the right side of the phone.
  • On Touch ID iPhones (With Home Button): Quickly triple-click the circular Home Button.

Triple-clicking again will instantly return the screen to its normal colour state.
