Every time you browse the web on your iPhone, the Safari browser meticulously logs the addresses of the websites you visit, saves tiny image files (cache) to speed up future loading times, and stores cookies to keep you logged into your accounts. Over months of heavy use, this accumulated data can consume gigabytes of storage space and occasionally cause the browser to crash or load pages incorrectly.
Clearing your Safari history and website data is an excellent troubleshooting step for fixing a glitchy browser, freeing up local storage, and protecting your privacy if you intend to hand your phone to someone else.
How to Clear Safari History and Data
Apple integrates the browser controls deeply into the iOS operating system, meaning you must clear this data through the main Settings app, not from within the Safari browser itself.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list (past the General and Control Centre sections) until you find Safari. Tap it.
- Scroll down the Safari settings page until you see a blue text link labelled Clear History and Website Data. Tap it.
A pop-up window will appear, offering you granular control over exactly how much history you want to delete. (Note: The options presented may vary slightly depending on your iOS version).
- Select the timeframe you wish to erase:
- Last hour
- Today
- Today and yesterday
- All history (This will completely wipe the browser back to a factory-fresh state).
- Select the Safari profiles you want to clear (if you have created separate Work and Personal profiles in iOS 17 or later).
- Tap the red Clear History button at the bottom of the screen to confirm.
Important Considerations Before Clearing
When you select “All history,” the action is permanent and comprehensive. Before you press the red button, be aware of the following consequences:
- You will be logged out: Safari deletes all authentication cookies. The next time you visit Amazon, Facebook, or your bank, you will need to enter your username and password again.
- iCloud Syncing: If your iPhone is synced via iCloud to your iPad or Mac, clicking “Clear History” will instantly wipe the Safari browsing history from all those devices simultaneously.
- Saved Passwords Remain Safe: Clearing your history does not delete your saved passwords stored in the Apple Keychain. When you return to a website, your iPhone will still offer to autofill your password via Face ID or Touch ID.
How to Delete Specific Websites Only
If you only want to delete one embarrassing search or a specific website without logging yourself out of everything else, do not use the “Clear History” button in Settings.
- Open the Safari app.
- Tap the Book icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the Clock icon at the top right of the panel to view your chronological history list.
- Swipe left on the specific website you want to delete.
- Tap the red Delete button that appears.
