How to Use Focus Modes on iPhone to Reduce Distractions

In an era of constant connectivity, your smartphone can easily become a major source of distraction. The endless ping of group chats, news alerts, and social media notifications can ruin your concentration during the workday or interrupt your relaxation at home.

To solve this modern problem, Apple introduced a powerful iOS productivity feature called Focus Modes. By configuring these profiles, you can regain control of your attention without sacrificing the ability to receive urgent calls.

What Are Focus Modes?

Think of Focus Modes as highly customisable versions of the classic “Do Not Disturb” feature. Instead of simply silencing everything on your phone, Focus allows you to create specific profiles for different scenarios—such as Work, Personal, Sleep, or Fitness.

Within each profile, you can explicitly dictate which people and which apps are allowed to interrupt you.

How to Set Up a New Focus Mode

Setting up your first profile only takes a few minutes.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Focus.
  3. You will see several default profiles (Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, Work). Tap on one to customise it, or tap the + icon in the top right corner to create a completely custom profile.
  4. Follow the on-screen setup wizard to begin configuring your permissions.

How to Customise Allowed Notifications

The core power of a Focus Mode lies in deciding who can break through the silence.

  • People: Tap on the People section to choose specific contacts. You can choose to Silence Notifications From annoying contacts, or Allow Notifications From critical contacts (like your manager or your spouse). Crucially, you should also review the “Allow Repeated Calls” toggle to ensure emergency calls can still reach you.
  • Apps: Tap on the Apps section to whitelist essential applications. If you are setting up a Work profile, you might allow notifications from Outlook, Slack, and Teams, while completely silencing Instagram and WhatsApp.

How to Customise Your iPhone Screens

To further reduce distractions, iOS allows you to link a Focus mode to a specific Lock Screen or Home Screen design.

  1. Within your Focus profile settings, look for the Customise Screens section.
  2. Tap the Choose button under the Home Screen preview.
  3. Select a specific Home Screen page that only contains work-related apps. When your Work Focus is active, all your games and entertainment apps will be hidden from view.

How to Schedule a Focus Mode Automatically

You do not need to manually toggle your profiles on and off every day. You can use Smart Activation to handle it for you.

  1. Scroll down to the Set a Schedule section and tap Add Schedule.
  2. You can choose to activate the Focus based on a Time (e.g., 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM), a Location (e.g., when your GPS detects you have arrived at the office), or an App (e.g., automatically turning on a “Reading” Focus whenever you open the Kindle app).

By leveraging Focus Modes, you can drastically reduce your screen time, establish healthy digital boundaries, and ensure your iPhone serves as a tool for productivity rather than a constant distraction.
