Low Power Mode is a fantastic feature on the iPhone that reduces background activity, limits display refresh rates, and drastically extends your battery life. By default, iOS will display a prompt asking if you want to enable Low Power Mode when your battery hits 20%.
However, if you know you have a long day ahead of you, waiting for 20% might be too late. Using Apple’s built-in Shortcuts app, you can completely automate this process, telling your iPhone to turn on Low Power Mode automatically at any battery percentage you choose—without you ever having to tap a button.
How to Automate Low Power Mode Using Shortcuts
The Shortcuts app comes pre-installed on all modern iPhones. If you deleted it, you can easily redownload it for free from the App Store.
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
- At the very bottom of the screen, tap on the Automation tab (the icon that looks like an alarm clock).
- Tap the blue New Automation button. (If you already have other automations set up, tap the + icon in the top right corner instead).
- Scroll down the list of triggers and select Battery Level.
Step 1: Setting the Trigger
Now, you need to decide at what exact percentage you want the automation to trigger.
- Use the slider to select your preferred battery percentage. For this example, let’s drag the slider to 40%.
- Below the slider, you have three conditions to choose from. Select Falls Below 40%.
- At the bottom of the screen, ensure you select Run Immediately. This is crucial—if you select “Run After Confirmation,” the iPhone will ask you for permission before turning it on, defeating the purpose of automation.
- Ensure the “Notify When Run” toggle is turned Off so it happens silently in the background.
- Tap Next in the top right corner.
Step 2: Assigning the Action
You have told the iPhone *when* to trigger. Now you need to tell it *what* to do.
- On the next screen, tap into the large Search bar at the top.
- Type “Low Power Mode” into the search bar.
- Under the scripting results, tap on Set Low Power Mode.
- The screen will now display the action: Turn Low Power Mode On. (If it says “Off” or “Toggle”, tap the blue word to change it to “On”).
- Tap Done in the top right corner to save your automation.
That’s it! You will now see your new automation listed on the screen. From now on, the exact moment your iPhone battery dips below 40%, Low Power Mode will instantly and silently activate, ensuring you have enough juice to get through the rest of the day.
