Modern iPhones feature expansive displays ranging from 6.1 inches up to 6.9 inches on Pro Max models. While these large OLED screens are fantastic for reading, video streaming, and multitasking, reaching UI elements at the very top of the display—such as the Safari address bar, back buttons, or Control Centre—with one hand requires awkward grip shifting that can easily lead to accidental drops. Apple includes an Accessibility feature called Reachability that instantly lowers the top half of the screen within easy reach of your thumb.
Why Enable Reachability?
Reachability transforms one-handed iPhone usability:
- Safe One-Handed Grip: Access high navigation buttons and search bars while commuting or carrying groceries without stretching your hand or shifting your grip.
- Instant Control Centre & Notifications: Swipe down on the lowered screen area to pull down Notification Centre or Control Centre with a small thumb motion.
- Zero App Interruption: Works across all apps and the Home Screen without resizing or closing active content.
How to Turn On Reachability in iOS Settings
Reachability is built into iOS Accessibility preferences:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Under the Physical and Motor category, tap on Touch.
- Locate the Reachability toggle.
- Switch the toggle to the On (green) position.
How to Trigger Reachability on iPhones Without a Home Button
On all iPhones with Face ID (iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and newer):
- Place your thumb on the horizontal gesture bar at the very bottom edge of your screen.
- Swipe straight down on the gesture bar by about half an inch.
- The entire top half of your display will smoothly slide down into the lower half of your screen.
- Tap the button or control you need.
- To restore full screen, tap anywhere in the empty upper space above the lowered screen, or swipe up from the bottom bar. The screen also resets automatically after a few seconds of inactivity.
How to Trigger Reachability on iPhones With a Home Button
On iPhone SE models and older hardware equipped with a physical or haptic Touch ID Home button:
- Lightly double-tap the surface of the Home button (touch it twice quickly without physically clicking or pressing it down).
- The screen slides down instantly. Tap the top area or press the Home button once to return to normal view.
