The Unwanted Nostalgia
The Apple Photos app on the iPhone is much more than a simple storage locker for your images; it uses machine learning to actively scan your library and identify faces, locations, and events. It uses this data to automatically generate “Memories”—curated slideshows of past vacations or relationships complete with dramatic background music. It also surfaces “Featured Photos” directly onto your home screen widgets and the “For You” tab. While many people enjoy this digital nostalgia, it can be incredibly upsetting if the algorithm decides to prominently display a photo of a deceased relative, an ex-partner, or a traumatic event while you are simply trying to find a screenshot. To protect your emotional peace, you can completely disable this algorithmic curation.
How to Turn Off Memories and Featured Photos
You can block the Photos app from surfacing these automatic collections via the main iOS settings menu.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list of apps until you find Photos. Tap it.
- Scroll down the Photos settings page to the section labeled “Memories & Featured Photos.”
- You will see two distinct toggle switches:
- Toggle Show Holiday Events to the Off position (to stop the app from grouping photos by calendar holidays).
- Toggle Show Featured Content to the Off position.
The Resulting Experience
By turning off “Show Featured Content,” you instantly neutralize the algorithm. The Photos app will immediately stop generating new Memory slideshows. The “For You” tab inside the app will become significantly quieter, and if you have a Photos widget on your home screen, it will stop randomly cycling through your camera roll, completely eliminating the risk of being ambushed by unwanted photographs.
