How to Disable the Gridlines on an iPhone Camera

When you open the Camera app on an iPhone, you might notice a very faint, white three-by-three grid overlaid across the screen. This grid is a compositional tool designed to help photographers perfectly level their horizons and apply the “Rule of Thirds.” While incredibly useful for shooting landscapes or framing artistic portraits, some casual users find the permanent lines distracting or confusing when they just want to take a quick, simple snapshot. If you prefer a completely clean, unobstructed viewfinder, you can easily turn this grid off.

How to Disable the Camera Grid

You cannot turn the grid off from within the Camera app itself; you must use the main iOS Settings app.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main menu until you locate Camera (it is grouped with other default media apps like Photos and Music).
  3. Tap on Camera.
  4. Scroll down to the section titled “Composition.”
  5. Look for the toggle switch labelled Grid.
  6. Tap the switch to move it to the Off position (the green background will turn to grey).

The next time you open your Camera app, the screen will be completely clear. If you ever decide you want to practice your photographic framing techniques in the future, you can return to this exact menu and toggle it back on instantly.
