Smart Punctuation is an iOS feature designed to automatically convert standard, typewriter-style punctuation marks into typographically correct characters. For example, it converts two consecutive hyphens (--) into an em dash (—), and straight quotes (" ") into curly, directional quotes (“ ”). While this makes essays and emails look professionally typeset, it is an absolute nightmare for programmers, sysadmins, and anyone interacting with command-line interfaces on their iPhone. Compilers and terminal emulators expect strict ASCII characters; attempting to paste a curly quote or an em dash into an SSH terminal or a Python script will immediately result in syntax errors.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Smart Punctuation feature system-wide on an iPhone, ensuring the characters you type remain exactly as they appear on the keyboard.
Disable Smart Punctuation
To stop the operating system from intelligently swapping out your ASCII characters for typographical equivalents, you must disable the feature within the core keyboard settings.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Scroll down again and tap on Keyboard.
- Look under the section labeled “All Keyboards” for the various text processing toggles.
- Locate the toggle switch for Smart Punctuation.
- Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the Keyboard Behavior
Toggling this switch immediately disables the background character substitution routine across all applications, from native apps to third-party SSH clients and code editors.
To verify the change is successful, open the Notes app and create a new note. Type a standard straight quote ("), followed by a word, and another straight quote. Then type two consecutive hyphens (--). The text will remain exactly as you typed it, utilizing raw ASCII straight quotes and double hyphens without any automatic conversion to curly quotes or em dashes. Your text input is now entirely safe for coding and terminal administration.
