How to Completely Disable the ‘Health’ App System-Wide on an iPhone

The Apple Health app serves as the central repository for all biometric data on an iOS device. It aggregates data from the Apple Watch, the iPhone’s built-in pedometer, third-party fitness trackers, and clinical health records (such as lab results and immunizations). While highly secure and encrypted on-device, storing massive amounts of sensitive Protected Health Information (PHI) on a portable endpoint presents a unique risk. In highly regulated corporate, government, or healthcare environments, administrators often mandate the complete removal of personal health tracking frameworks from company-issued devices to comply with strict data minimization policies and prevent potential HIPAA/GDPR liabilities in the event the device is compromised.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Health app system-wide on an iPhone using Apple’s built-in Screen Time restrictions, preventing the application from running and stopping the OS from aggregating biometric data.

Disable the Health App via Screen Time

While you cannot technically “Delete” the core Health framework from iOS, utilizing Content & Privacy Restrictions guarantees the app cannot be executed, accessed, or utilized by background system hooks for silent data collection.

  1. Unlock the iPhone and open the main Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.
  3. If you haven’t already, tap Turn On Screen Time and follow the prompts. (For maximum security, ensure you tap Use Screen Time Passcode to set a PIN that prevents unauthorized changes).
  4. Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  5. Toggle the main Content & Privacy Restrictions switch at the top to the On (green) position.
  6. Tap on Allowed Apps. You will be prompted to enter your Screen Time passcode.
  7. Locate Health in the list of native applications.
  8. Toggle the switch next to Health to the Off (grey) position.

Verify the Configuration Lockdown

By restricting the app via Screen Time, iOS immediately unloads the Health application from the springboard and blocks its execution privileges entirely, severing its connection to the HealthKit API.

To verify the lockdown is active, return to the iOS Home Screen. The Health app icon (the white square with the red heart) will be completely missing. Swipe down to access Spotlight Search and type “Health”; the application will not appear. Additionally, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Health; the menu will likely be empty or restricted, as the core repository is no longer accessible. The endpoint is now cleanly stripped of its native biometric data aggregation capabilities.
