If you have ever checked your iPhone or iPad storage only to find a mysterious grey bar labeled “System Data” consuming 20GB, 30GB, or even 50GB of your space, you are not alone. This is one of the most frustrating storage bugs in iOS.
System Data (formerly known as “Other” storage) is supposed to contain essential operating system files, temporary caches, Siri voices, and offline translation dictionaries. iOS is designed to automatically manage and clear this cache when your device needs more space. However, when the automated cleanup process fails, these hidden files bloat out of control.
Because Apple does not provide a simple “Delete System Data” button, you have to force the operating system to clean itself. Here are the most effective methods to clear System Data storage on your iPhone and iPad.
1. The Immediate Fixes: Clearing Common Caches
Before taking drastic measures, try clearing the most common sources of cached bloat.
Clear Safari Website Data
Safari caches hundreds of websites to load them faster later. This is often miscategorized under System Data rather than Safari’s direct app size.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Select All time and confirm.
Manage Messages History
By default, iOS keeps every text message and iMessage attachment forever. If you have years of GIFs and videos saved, they can drastically inflate your storage.
- Go to Settings > Messages.
- Scroll down to Message History and tap Keep Messages.
- Change this from Forever to 1 Year or 30 Days. iOS will instantly delete older attachments, often freeing up gigabytes of space.
2. Force Restart Your Device
A standard reboot does not always clear the system cache. A Force Restart cuts the power at a hardware level, which forces iOS to dump temporary memory logs when it boots back up.

- Tap Back Up Now.
- Wait for the backup to finish entirely, then check your iPhone Storage again. You may see a significant reduction in System Data.
5. The Ultimate Fix: Wipe and Restore
If your System Data is taking up more than 15GB and none of the above methods have worked, the cache is fundamentally corrupted. The only guaranteed way to fix a corrupted iOS cache is to wipe the device and restore it from a backup.
When you restore an iPhone, iOS does not copy over the corrupted “System Data” cache files. It only restores your apps, settings, and personal data.
- Backup First: Ensure you have a fresh, completed iCloud or Mac/PC backup (Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup).
- Erase the Device: Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Restore: Once the phone reboots to the “Hello” screen, follow the prompts and select Restore from iCloud Backup (or from Mac/PC).
While a full restore takes time, it is the only 100% effective method for completely clearing bloated System Data and returning your iPhone or iPad storage to normal.
