When you attempt to share a photo or file with a friend via AirDrop in a crowded coffee shop or airport, it can be incredibly confusing if half the devices popping up on the screen are simply named “iPhone” or “John’s iPhone.”
By default, Apple uses the first name associated with your Apple ID. However, changing your device’s name to something unique (like a nickname, an emoji, or your full name) makes it instantly recognizable, ensuring your friends don’t accidentally AirDrop a private document to a stranger.
How to Change Your Device Name
Changing your AirDrop name actually involves changing the system-wide name of your iPhone. This is the same name that appears when you connect to Bluetooth in your car or tether your phone to a computer.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- At the very top of the screen, tap on About.
- Tap on Name (which will currently display your existing device name).
- Tap the small “X” icon to clear the old text, and use the keyboard to type your new, unique name. (Yes, you can include emojis!)
- Tap Done on the keyboard to save the changes.
The change takes effect immediately. The next time someone opens the AirDrop menu near you, your new custom name will instantly broadcast to their screen.
AirDrop Privacy Tip
While having a recognizable name is great for friends, you might not want strangers in public seeing your full name pop up on their devices. To prevent this, you can restrict AirDrop visibility. Go to Settings > General > AirDrop and ensure it is set to Contacts Only. This ensures your custom name is only broadcast to people who are already saved in your address book.
