Apple designed the iPhone lock screen to provide instant access to the camera. By simply swiping left or pressing the camera icon in the bottom right corner, you can snap a photo without having to unlock your phone. While this is incredibly convenient for capturing quick moments, it can also lead to hundreds of accidental, blurry photos taken inside your pocket or bag. If you frequently trigger the camera by mistake, or if you want to prevent unauthorized users from taking photos with your device, you can completely remove the camera feature from the lock screen.
How to Remove the Lock Screen Camera Using Screen Time
Apple does not provide a simple toggle switch in the Lock Screen settings to turn off the camera. Instead, because the camera is considered a core system app, you must use the “Screen Time” parental controls feature to restrict access to it.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.
- If you have never used Screen Time before, tap Turn on Screen Time and follow the prompts. (Choose “This is My iPhone” when asked).
- Inside the Screen Time menu, tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- At the top of the screen, tap the toggle switch next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to turn it On (the switch will turn green).
- Now, tap on Allowed Apps.
- You will see a list of built-in Apple applications. Locate Camera.
- Tap the toggle switch next to Camera to turn it Off.
What Happens When You Restrict the Camera?
As soon as you turn the Camera off in the Allowed Apps menu, several things happen simultaneously across your iPhone system:
- The Lock Screen Icon: Lock your phone and wake the screen. You will notice the camera icon in the bottom right corner is completely grayed out and disabled.
- The Swipe Gesture: Swiping left on the lock screen will no longer open the camera. The screen will simply bounce back.
- The Home Screen: The official Apple Camera app icon will completely disappear from your Home Screen and App Library.
Important Note: Because you have restricted the system camera, you will not be able to use the default Apple Camera app to take photos even when the phone is unlocked. However, third-party apps like Instagram, Snapchat, or WhatsApp will still be able to use the camera hardware within their own interfaces.
How to Turn the Camera Back On
If you want to use the Apple Camera app again, you must reverse the process.
- Go back to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.
- Turn the Camera toggle switch back On.
- The camera icon will immediately return to your lock screen and your home screen.
