How to Free Up iCloud Storage Space Quickly

Apple generously provides 5GB of free cloud storage to every user, but between daily photo backups, large message attachments, and automated device backups, that limit is usually exhausted within months. If you are constantly receiving annoying “Storage Full” notifications on your iPhone, learning how to free up iCloud storage space is a vital digital maintenance habit.

Before you commit to paying a monthly subscription fee for iCloud+, there are several highly effective ways to optimise your data and reclaim gigabytes of space instantly.

1. Manage and Delete Old Device Backups

Often, the biggest culprit draining your iCloud space is old, unnecessary device backups—particularly from old iPhones or iPads you no longer even own.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on your Name/Apple ID at the very top of the menu.
  3. Tap on iCloud, then select Manage Account Storage.
  4. Tap on Backups.
  5. Review the list of devices. If you see an old device you no longer use, tap it, and select Delete & Turn Off Backup.

2. Disable iCloud Photos (or Delete Large Videos)

High-resolution photos and 4K videos will decimate your 5GB allowance incredibly fast. If you prefer to back up your media using a free alternative like Google Photos, you can turn off Apple’s native photo syncing entirely.

  1. Navigate back to Manage Account Storage in your iCloud settings.
  2. Tap on Photos.
  3. Select Turn Off & Delete from iCloud. (Ensure you have a local copy of your images before doing this).

A Less Drastic Approach

If you want to keep using iCloud for photos, open your iPhone’s native Photos app, navigate to the Albums tab, scroll down to Media Types, and review your Videos. Deleting just three or four long videos can often free up a massive amount of space.

3. Clean Up Your Messages App

If you sync your iMessages to iCloud, every meme, GIF, and video sent in your group chats counts against your storage limit.

  1. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Messages.
  3. Tap on Review Large Attachments.
  4. Here you can swipe left to delete massive files that have been lingering in your chat history for years.

By taking a few minutes to audit your device backups, prune your media library, and clear out old text message attachments, you can easily free up iCloud storage space. This routine maintenance ensures your phone can continue performing essential daily backups without forcing you into an expensive subscription tier.
