How to Hide Alerts for Specific Group Chats in Apple Messages

Reclaiming Your Lock Screen from Group Chats

Group chats are an excellent way to coordinate plans with friends, stay in touch with family, or manage a team at work. However, when a dozen people are constantly replying with memes, thumbs-up reactions, and single-word responses, a highly active iMessage group chat can quickly become a massive distraction, vibrating your iPhone every three seconds.

If you do not want to leave the group completely but desperately need a break from the constant notifications, Apple provides a built-in solution. You can selectively mute alerts for any specific conversation in the Messages app without affecting your other incoming texts or calls.

Here is exactly how to hide alerts for a group chat on your iPhone or iPad, and how to ensure you still get notified if someone mentions you directly.

How to Mute a Group Chat on iPhone

Muting a conversation in Apple Messages is incredibly simple and can be done in just a few taps. The other members of the group chat will not be notified that you have muted them.

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Locate the specific group chat you want to silence in your conversation list.
  3. Swipe left on the conversation. (Do not swipe all the way to the edge of the screen, or you will delete the thread).
  4. Two buttons will appear: a purple icon with a bell and a red icon with a trash can. Tap the purple bell icon.

That is it. A small grey crescent moon icon will now appear next to the conversation in your chat list. When someone sends a message to that group, your phone will not vibrate, light up, or play a notification sound. The messages will simply wait silently for you to read them when you are ready.

Alternative Method: Muting from Inside the Chat

If you are already inside the group chat reading messages and decide you have had enough, you can mute it without returning to the main menu.

  1. Tap the group name or the cluster of profile pictures at the top-center of the screen.
  2. Scroll down through the chat settings.
  3. Toggle the switch next to Hide Alerts so that it turns green.
  4. Tap Done in the top-right corner.

How to Unmute the Group Chat

If the conversation has calmed down and you want to start receiving notifications again, reversing the process is just as easy.

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Find the muted group chat (look for the grey crescent moon icon).
  3. Swipe left on the conversation.
  4. Tap the purple bell icon again to unmute it.

How to Still Receive Mentions in a Muted Chat

The primary fear most people have when muting a work or family group chat is that they will miss an urgent message directed specifically at them. Fortunately, Apple has a clever feature that allows you to mute the general chatter but still receive a loud notification if someone “mentions” your name.

To ensure this feature is turned on:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Messages.
  3. Scroll down to the “Mentions” section.
  4. Ensure the toggle next to Notify Me is turned on (green).

With this setting enabled, your iPhone will remain completely silent when the group is chatting normally. However, if a group member types your name (e.g., “Hey @Sarah, are you still bringing the documents?”), your phone will light up and alert you immediately, ensuring you never miss anything critical.
