If you occasionally hand your iPhone to a friend so they can look at a funny meme, you run the risk of them swiping left or right into a photo you would prefer they didn’t see. Whether it is a picture of a surprise birthday gift, a screenshot of sensitive medical information, or a private personal photo, you need a way to keep certain images out of your main camera roll.
Fortunately, Apple built a highly secure, hidden album directly into the Photos app. In modern versions of iOS (iOS 16 and later), this album is automatically locked behind your Face ID or Touch ID, making it impossible for anyone else to view your secrets, even if the phone is unlocked.
Step 1: Hide the Photo from the Main Grid
When you hide a photo, it is completely stripped out of your main “Recents” camera roll. It will not appear in the “For You” memories, and it will not appear in any standard photo widgets on your home screen.
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
- Find the photo (or video) that you want to hide and tap to open it.
- Look at the top right corner of the screen and tap the three dots inside a circle.
- A drop-down menu will appear. Tap on Hide.
- A pop-up warning will appear asking you to confirm. Tap Hide Photo.
The photo will instantly vanish from your screen, and the app will return you to your main camera roll.
Step 2: How to View Your Hidden Photos
Because the photo was removed from the main timeline, you have to navigate to a specific, secret folder to find it again.
- Open the Photos app.
- Look at the bottom of the screen and tap on the Albums tab.
- Scroll down to the very bottom of the Albums page.
- Under the “Utilities” section, you will see an album named Hidden. It will have a small padlock icon next to it.
- Tap on Hidden.
The screen will instantly blur and prompt you for Face ID (or Touch ID on older phones). Once it recognizes your face, the album will unlock, revealing all of the photos you have stashed away.
Step 3: Unhiding a Photo
If you no longer need to keep a photo secret (for example, the surprise birthday party is over), you can easily push it back into the normal camera roll.
- Open the Hidden album using Face ID.
- Tap the photo you want to unhide.
- Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
- Tap Unhide.
The photo will disappear from the Hidden folder and magically return to its original chronological place in your main Recents library.
Troubleshooting: The “Hidden” Album is Missing
If you scroll to the bottom of the Albums tab and the “Hidden” folder is completely missing, it means you (or someone else) disabled the album in the main iPhone settings.
- Open the main Settings app on your iPhone (not the Photos app).
- Scroll down and tap on Photos.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Show Hidden Album.
- Ensure the switch is turned ON (green).
- While you are here, also ensure the switch labelled Use Face ID (or Use Passcode) is turned ON. This guarantees the album remains locked.
Once you flip the switch, return to the Photos app, and the Hidden album will reappear at the bottom of the screen.
