How to Hide Alerts for Specific iMessage Conversations on iPhone

The Notification Spam Vector

While the iPhone’s notification system is essential for staying connected, certain group chats or highly active text threads can quickly become overwhelming. If you are trapped in a massive iMessage group chat where dozens of people are firing off rapid messages, your phone will constantly buzz, light up, and play alert tones, severely disrupting your focus or draining your battery. You do not need to silence your entire phone or block the contacts to stop this disruption.

How to Hide Alerts for Specific Conversations

You can instruct the iOS Messages app to surgically mute notifications for a single, specific conversation thread while allowing all other text messages to ring normally.

1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
2. Locate the specific conversation thread (either a group chat or a single contact) that is generating the unwanted alerts.
3. Swipe left directly across the conversation from right to left.
4. Two hidden buttons will appear on the right side of the screen: a purple bell icon and a red trash can.
5. Tap the purple bell icon (which has a slash through it).

Alternatively, you can tap into the conversation itself, tap the contact’s name or group name at the very top of the screen, scroll down, and toggle the Hide Alerts switch to the On position.

The conversation is now muted. A small, grey crescent moon icon will appear next to the thread in your main Messages list, indicating that all future messages in this specific chat will be silently delivered in the background without triggering any vibration or sound.
