How to Factory Reset Mac

The Cryptographic Annihilation Vector

When preparing to sell an Apple computer on the secondary market or transferring ownership to a new employee, manually dragging your personal files to the Trash is mathematically insufficient. Hidden `.plist` configurations, cached passwords in the Keychain, and deep OS-level modifications will remain embedded on the solid-state drive. To ensure absolute data sterility, you must execute a thermonuclear protocol: the Erase All Content and Settings daemon. This command mathematically shreds the cryptographic keys used to encrypt the APFS volume, instantly rendering every byte of personal data permanently unreadable, and then cleanly resets the Darwin kernel to its factory state.

How to Factory Reset Mac

In macOS Monterey and later (specifically on Macs equipped with Apple Silicon or the T2 Security Chip), Apple mathematically decoupled the user data partition from the core OS partition, allowing for a rapid, iPhone-style wipe without requiring a total 12GB reinstall from recovery mode.

1. Phase 1: The Pre-Flight Checklist:
* WARNING: This is a mathematically absolute, irreversible destruction of your data. Ensure you have executed a Time Machine backup to an external drive.
* Ensure the Mac is plugged into a physical power source. If the battery dies during the cryptographic wipe, the motherboard may become bricked.
2. Phase 2: Summon the Erase Daemon (macOS Ventura, Sonoma & Sequoia):
* Click the Apple Logo in the absolute top-left corner of the master menu bar.
* Select System Settings.
* In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click explicitly on General.
* In the main pane, click the module labelled Transfer or Reset.
* Click the stark button explicitly labelled Erase All Content and Settings…
3. Phase 3: Summon the Erase Daemon (macOS Monterey):
* Click the Apple Logo > System Preferences.
* While the System Preferences window is open, look at the absolute top menu bar of your screen.
* Click the word System Preferences in the menu bar, then select Erase All Content and Settings… from the drop-down menu.
4. Phase 4: The Execution and Annihilation Sequence:
* The Erase Assistant daemon will spawn. It will mathematically halt and demand your Administrator password to authorize the destruction.
* The OS will present a final telemetry dump of everything about to be vaporized (Apple ID connections, Touch ID fingerprints, Bluetooth pairings).
* Click Continue.
* You may be prompted to enter your Apple ID password to sign out of Find My Mac and remove Activation Lock. This is critical; failing to do this will render the machine mathematically useless to the next owner.
* Click the stark red button explicitly labelled Erase All Content & Settings.
* The Mathematical Result: The Mac will violently reboot into a black screen. It shreds the APFS cryptographic keys, destroying your data in milliseconds. After a few minutes, the machine will respawn at the sterile “Hello” setup screen.
