Staring at a bright white iPad screen in a dimly lit room can cause severe eye strain and disrupt your circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep. To combat this, Apple integrated a system-wide Dark Mode into iPadOS. When activated, Dark Mode reverses the color scheme of the entire operating system and all supported applications, replacing glaring white backgrounds with deep, soothing blacks and dark greys. Not only is it easier on the eyes, but on newer iPads equipped with OLED displays, it can also significantly improve battery life.
How to Enable Dark Mode Manually
If you are reading in bed and suddenly realize the screen is too bright, you can activate Dark Mode instantly.
- Open the Settings app on your iPad (the grey gear icon).
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
- At the very top of the main pane, you will see two distinct appearance options: “Light” and “Dark.”
- Tap the circle underneath Dark.
Your screen will immediately transition. The Settings app background will turn black, the text will turn white, and this change will instantly propagate to your Home Screen, Safari, Mail, and thousands of third-party apps.
Pro Tip: For even faster access, you can swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPad screen to open the Control Center. Long-press the vertical brightness slider, and a dedicated Dark Mode toggle button will appear, allowing you to flip the switch without opening the Settings app.
How to Schedule Dark Mode Automatically
The best way to use Dark Mode is to let your iPad manage it for you, automatically matching the ambient light of your environment throughout the day.
- Navigate back to Settings > Display & Brightness.
- Look directly below the Light/Dark selection buttons and find the toggle switch labeled Automatic.
- Tap the toggle to turn it On (it will turn green).
- A new menu option labeled Options will appear beneath the toggle. Tap it.
- You will be presented with two scheduling choices:
- Sunset to Sunrise: (Highly Recommended). The iPad will use your location data to calculate exactly when the sun sets in your city and automatically switch to Dark Mode. It will revert to Light Mode at dawn.
- Custom Schedule: If you prefer strict control, tap this option and manually set the exact minute Dark Mode turns on (e.g., 8:00 PM) and when it turns off (e.g., 7:00 AM).
Once configured, you will never have to manually adjust your iPad’s color scheme again.
