How to Empty Trash on an iPhone

If you have spent your entire life using a Mac or a Windows PC, you are used to the concept of a single, universal “Recycle Bin” on your desktop. If you want to permanently delete a file, you simply right-click that bin and select “Empty.”

The iPhone does not work this way. There is no universal “Trash” folder on iOS. Because Apple built the iPhone using a strict “sandbox” architecture, every single app operates in total isolation. If you delete a photo, it goes into a trash can specifically built for the Photos app. If you delete an email, it goes into a different trash can built for the Mail app.

If your iPhone is telling you that your storage is full, you must go into the individual apps and empty their specific trash bins.

How to Empty the Trash in Apple Photos

Photos and 4K videos are the number one cause of storage warnings on an iPhone. When you delete a photo, Apple assumes you might have made a mistake. It moves the photo to a hidden folder and holds it hostage for 30 days before actually deleting it.

1. Open the Photos app.
2. Look at the menu bar at the very bottom of the screen and tap on Albums.
3. Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of the page.
4. Look under the “Utilities” section and tap on Recently Deleted.
5. (Security Check: Face ID or Touch ID will activate to prove you are the owner of the phone before showing you the hidden photos).
6. Once inside, look at the top right corner and tap the Select button.
7. Look at the bottom left corner and tap the Delete All button.
8. A warning will pop up. Tap the red button to confirm.

The photos are now permanently erased, and the storage space is instantly returned to your phone.

How to Empty the Trash in Apple Mail

If you receive hundreds of emails a day, your Mail trash bin can swell to several gigabytes in size, especially if the emails contain large PDF attachments.

1. Open the Mail app.
2. Ensure you are on the main “Mailboxes” screen (if you are looking at your inbox, tap the blue back arrow in the top left corner).
3. Look down the list of folders and tap on Trash (it has a small icon of a garbage can).
4. Look at the top right corner of the screen and tap Edit.
5. Look at the bottom right corner of the screen and tap Select All.
6. Look at the bottom right corner again and tap Delete.

Every single email in the trash is now permanently wiped.

How to Empty the Trash in the Files App

If you use your iPhone like a real computer (downloading PDFs from Safari, saving Word documents from work), you probably use the native Apple Files app. It has its own dedicated trash bin.

1. Open the Files app (it is a blue folder icon with a white background).
2. Ensure you are on the Browse tab at the bottom of the screen.
3. Look under the “Locations” section and tap on Recently Deleted.
4. Tap the Three Horizontal Dots (…) in the top right corner.
5. Tap Select.
6. Look at the bottom of the screen and tap Delete All.

What About Third-Party Apps? (Gmail, WhatsApp, etc.)

You cannot use the Apple Settings app to empty the trash in third-party applications. If your Google Gmail app is taking up 15GB of space, you must open the Gmail app itself, tap its specific menu button, find its specific Trash folder, and hit “Empty Trash Now.”

If an app (like TikTok or WhatsApp) is taking up a massive amount of storage space and does not seem to have a “Trash” folder anywhere in its settings, the fastest way to clear it is to delete the entire app from your home screen and then reinstall it from the App Store. This will instantly nuke all of its hidden cache files.
