How to Disable “Wake on Wrist Raise” Globally on Apple Watch

The G-Force Sensor

By default, the Apple Watch relies on its internal gyroscope and accelerometer to determine when you want to look at the screen. Whenever you physically rotate your wrist upward, a feature called “Wake on Wrist Raise” instantly fires up the OLED display. While convenient, this is incredibly problematic in specific scenarios. If you are driving and turning the steering wheel, talking with your hands during a meeting, or sleeping, the watch screen will constantly ignite, distracting everyone around you and severely draining the battery. To gain absolute manual control over your display, you must disable the G-force trigger.

How to Turn Off Wake on Wrist Raise

You can permanently disconnect the screen from the physical gyroscope via the Display settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Scroll down to the “Wake” section.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Wake on Wrist Raise.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Manual Ignition Only

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background hardware link between the motion sensors and the screen. The next time you lift your arm, the watch will remain completely, absolutely black. The display will now only ignite if you intentionally, physically tap the glass or press the Digital Crown, ensuring your screen never again lights up an entire movie theater when you reach for your drink.
