How to Disable “Wake on Wrist Raise” on Apple Watch

The False Positives

By default, the Apple Watch relies heavily on its internal accelerometer to manage the screen. The “Wake on Wrist Raise” feature attempts to guess when you are looking at the watch by detecting a sudden twist of your forearm. While convenient, it is notoriously inaccurate. If you are driving a car, typing aggressively on a keyboard, or gesturing while you talk, the watch screen will constantly flash on and off in your peripheral vision, heavily draining your battery. You must sever the accelerometer’s control over the display.

How to Turn Off Wake on Wrist Raise

You can permanently lock the screen state via the Display settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Scroll down to the “Wake” section.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Wake on Wrist Raise.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Manual Screen Activation

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background gesture-analysis daemon. The screen is now physically inert to arm movement. You can flail your arms, drive, or run, and the screen will remain perfectly black (or remain in its dim “Always On” state if you have that enabled). To fully wake the screen to interact with apps, you are now strictly required to either tap the physical glass with your finger or press the Digital Crown, guaranteeing maximum battery preservation.
