Apple’s iPadOS features powerful multitasking capabilities, including Split View and Slide Over, which allow you to run two or three applications on the screen simultaneously. While this is fantastic for productivity power users, it can be incredibly frustrating for casual users or children. Accidental swipes near the top of the screen can unintentionally trigger Split View, abruptly shrinking your current app and forcing another one onto the screen. If you find yourself accidentally triggering these features, or if you simply prefer a distraction-free, single-app experience, you can completely disable multitasking.
How to Disable Multitasking in iPadOS 15 and Later
In modern versions of iPadOS, the multitasking features are deeply integrated into the operating system. While you cannot entirely remove the three-dot multitasking button at the top of the screen, you can significantly alter its behavior to prevent accidental window splitting.
- Open the Settings app on your iPad’s Home Screen.
- Scroll down the left-hand navigation menu and tap on Multitasking & Gestures.
- Look at the very top of the right-hand panel under the “Multitasking” section.
- You will see three distinct options: Split View & Slide Over, Stage Manager (if supported by your hardware), and Off.
- Tap to select the Off option.
By selecting “Off,” you are instructing the iPad to operate strictly in single-app mode. If you accidentally tap the three dots at the top of the screen in the future, nothing will happen. You will no longer be able to drag apps from the dock to create split screens.
How to Disable Stage Manager
If you own an iPad Pro, iPad Air (5th generation or later), or an iPad mini (A17 Pro), you might also be accidentally triggering Stage Manager, Apple’s windowed multitasking interface. If your apps are constantly shrinking into floating, overlapping windows, you need to turn this specific feature off.
- Open the Settings app.
- Navigate to Multitasking & Gestures.
- If Stage Manager is currently selected, simply tap Off (or switch back to Split View & Slide Over if you prefer the classic split-screen behavior without the floating windows).
Alternatively, you can toggle Stage Manager instantly from the Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Center, and tap the icon that looks like a rectangle with three smaller squares to the left of it to disable the feature immediately.
