How to Disable the Startup Chime on a Mac

The Acoustic Disruption Vector

The Mac startup chime is one of the most recognizable audio signatures in computing history. Historically, it served as an audible diagnostic tone confirming that the hardware had successfully passed its Power-On Self-Test (POST). However, in modern environments—such as lecture halls, libraries, or shared offices—booting up your laptop and broadcasting a loud, synthetic chord to the entire room is highly disruptive. While Apple removed the chime for several years, they recently reintroduced it on newer silicon models.

How to Disable the Startup Chime

You can instruct macOS to permanently mute this hardware-level diagnostic tone without affecting your standard system volume.

1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen.
2. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Sound.
4. In the main pane, look at the top section titled Sound Effects.
5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Play sound on startup.
6. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

The setting is saved immediately to the system’s non-volatile random-access memory (NVRAM). The next time you power on or restart your Mac, it will boot in absolute silence.
