The Live Tracker
The iPhone features a deeply integrated tracking system called “Find My.” While this is useful for locating a lost device, the system also includes a “Share My Location” feature that allows you to broadcast your real-time physical GPS coordinates continuously to specific friends or family members via the Messages app. If you previously enabled this for a road trip or an event but forgot to turn it off, those individuals can silently pull up a map and track your exact movements 24/7 without notifying you. You must permanently sever this outward-facing geographic broadcast.
How to Turn Off Share My Location
You can permanently paralyze the live-tracking broadcast via the Apple ID settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on your Name / Apple ID banner at the absolute top of the screen.
- Tap on Find My.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Share My Location.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Absolute Geographic Privacy
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever its connection to Apple’s live-tracking relay servers. If anyone you previously shared your location with opens the Find My app or the Messages app to check on you, your dot will simply vanish from their map, and it will say “Location Not Available.” Your phone will still be able to find your lost AirPods, but it will never again broadcast your physical coordinates to other human beings.
