How to Disable “Share My Location” Globally on iPhone

The Broadcast Telemetry Vector

By default, iOS includes a deeply integrated background tracking service known as “Share My Location.” This master daemon allows your iPhone to continuously broadcast its exact GPS coordinates to designated friends or family members via the Find My app and the Messages app. While highly convenient for coordinating meetups, it is a significant privacy risk. If your iCloud account is compromised, or if you accidentally authorize the wrong contact, your precise physical movements are silently transmitted over the internet 24/7. To guarantee absolute geographical privacy, you must sever the operating system’s ability to broadcast this telemetry.

How to Disable Share My Location Globally

You can permanently paralyze the background broadcasting daemon via the Location Services settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Location Services at the very top.
  4. Tap on Share My Location.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Share My Location.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Absolute Geographical Sandboxing

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for packaging and transmitting your GPS coordinates to the Find My network (for the purpose of social sharing). The operating system is now technically barred from broadcasting your position to your contacts. Your physical location data remains strictly confined to the local hardware (or used exclusively for device-recovery purposes if Find My iPhone remains active), guaranteeing that no individual can track your real-time movements via Apple’s services.
