How to Disable the Search Button on the iPhone Home Screen

The Interface Intrusion Vector

In recent iterations of iOS, Apple introduced a persistent “Search” button anchored directly to the bottom of the Home Screen, resting just millimeters above the main application Dock. By default, it replaces the classic series of tiny dots that previously indicated how many pages of apps you had. Because it sits exactly where your thumb naturally rests while scrolling, it is incredibly easy to accidentally tap this button, violently yanking you out of your workflow and launching the system-wide Spotlight search interface.

How to Disable the Search Button

You can instruct the iPhone to remove this intrusive button and restore the classic, non-interactive page indicator dots.

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Home Screen & App Library.
3. Look for the section titled Search.
4. Locate the toggle switch labelled Show on Home Screen.
5. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Return to your Home Screen. The prominent Search button above your Dock will have vanished, replaced by the subtle, traditional dots. If you ever actually need to use the Spotlight search function, you can simply swipe downwards on the middle of the screen—a much more deliberate and less accident-prone gesture.
