How to Disable the “Raise to Wake” Feature on iPhone

The Oversensitive Display

By default, the iPhone utilizes its internal accelerometer and gyroscope to guess when you are looking at it. This feature, called “Raise to Wake,” automatically turns on the screen the moment you lift the phone off a table or pull it out of your pocket. While convenient, the sensors are notoriously oversensitive. If you are holding your phone while walking, jogging, or simply shifting in your chair, the screen will constantly flash on and off, burning through your battery life and risking accidental touches on the lock screen. You must permanently sever the accelerometer’s control over the display.

How to Turn Off Raise to Wake

You can permanently paralyze the motion-activated screen via the Display settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Scroll down the menu to the “Brightness” section.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Raise to Wake.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Manual Screen Control

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for analyzing your wrist angle. The screen is now completely inert to physical movement. If you pick the phone up, shake it, or pull it out of your pocket, the screen will remain absolute black. To wake the display, you are now strictly required to either intentionally tap the glass (if “Tap to Wake” is enabled) or press the physical side power button, guaranteeing maximum battery preservation.
