The Aggressive Vibrations
The Apple Watch relies heavily on its internal “Taptic Engine” to deliver silent notifications. By default, when you receive a text message, the watch delivers a subtle, single tap to your wrist. However, if you work in a loud environment or frequently miss these gentle notifications, you might have previously enabled a setting called “Prominent Haptics.” This feature forces the watch to violently vibrate your wrist with a massive, secondary shockwave right before the actual notification tap arrives. If you now work a desk job and find this aggressive double-vibration startling or painful, you must disable the prominent setting.
How to Turn Off Prominent Haptics
You can force the Taptic Engine to return to its gentle default state via the watch settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Sound & Haptics.
- Scroll down to the “Haptics” section.
- You will see a visual selector with two options: “Default” and “Prominent.”
- Tap on Default. (The checkmark will move to the Default option).
A Gentle Tap
The change takes effect immediately. The next time you receive a phone call, an alarm, or a text message, the watch will no longer deliver the massive, startling pre-vibration shockwave. It will simply emit the standard, single, polite tap to your wrist, saving a small amount of battery power and significantly reducing the physical disruption of notifications.
