The First-Party Tracking
While Apple aggressively markets the iPhone as a privacy-centric device that blocks third-party trackers, the company maintains its own internal advertising network. By default, iOS features a setting known as “Personalized Ads.” When this is enabled, Apple uses your App Store search history, your Apple News reading habits, and your location data to build a behavioral profile. They then use this profile to serve you highly targeted advertisements within first-party apps like the App Store and Apple Stocks. If you refuse to be tracked and monetized by the operating system manufacturer, you must sever this first-party telemetry bridge.
How to Disable Personalized Ads on iPhone
You can permanently paralyze Apple’s internal tracking daemon via the global Privacy settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
- Scroll all the way down to the absolute bottom of the page and tap on Apple Advertising.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Personalized Ads.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Hardened Behavioral Perimeter
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for cataloging your first-party application usage for the purpose of advertising. The operating system is now technically barred from generating a behavioral profile for the Apple Ad network. While you may still see advertisements in the App Store, they will be entirely contextual (based only on what you search for in that exact moment) rather than being driven by a hidden historical database of your personal interests.
